The next season he showed great success. He showed that he was a player to invest at, he scored 9 goals in 20 played games and his Ajax won the league. He made his big breakthrough in the 1983-84 season, when he scored 28 goals in 26 games. Marco continue the same way. He

and his Ajax won the Dutch league again in 1985, champion of the cup in Holland 1986 and 1987. The 1987-88 season the Italian club Milan AC bought him. In 1987-88 he got a long-lasting injure, so he missed the mostly in that season.
He only played 11 games and scored 3 goals when his new club Milan won their first league Championship since 1978-79.

Because of the injure he was hesitant if he could play the European Championship 1988 in West Germany that summer. It was hesitant if he should come along to West Germany. But Marco played in the EURO 88 (European Championship 1988). And Marco went on to be the hero of EURO 88 after Holland has been betted Soviet with 2-0 in the final on the Olympic Stadium in Munich. The first goal Marco’s team-mate in Milan scored Ruud Gullit and Marco van Basten scored the second goal from a totally impossible angel, Marco scored 5 goals and he won the goal league. A expert jury selected Marco to the best player in the EURO 88. As price he was award a car in the 50000 DM class. It's thanks to another Dutch champion, the great Johan Cruyff, that Van Basten has become such an outstanding footballer. In the World Cup 1990 in Italy were all the three Dutch Milan players in the team (Frank Rijkaard, Ruud Gullit and Marco van Basten). And Ruud Gullit decided that he wanted to play on the middle but Marco wanted to have Frank Rijkaard on that position and Gullit on the edge. The 1990 years World Cup was a disappointment for all the Dutch players. Holland lost in the eighth-final against West Germany. In the 1990-91 years season Marco was along way from his standard when he scored 11 goals in 33 games. But the next season he scored 25 goals in 31 games, it was a personal record. In 1992 it was time again for the European Championship, now in Sweden. Holland played they group games in Gothenburg, Holland played well in the group, but in the semi-final Holland lost against Denmark. Marco missed a penalty. In the autumn the same year was Marco back in his old shape, that autumn he was the best footballer ever in the whole world. He scored 13 goals in 15 games. Marco van Basten has after the season when he scored 13 goals in 15 games, been injured in his ankle. In 1992 he was married with his cohab since the last 10 years, Liesbeth van Basten-van Capelleveen. The daughters of the couple and the nearest friends and relatives were at the civil marriage. The party was held on a medieval castle outside Utrecht. He has played 147 games and he has scored 90 goals for Milan in Serie A, he played totally 201 games and scored 124 goals, 34 on penalty. He was selected as the best player in Europe 1988, 1989 and 1992. Nowadays the family (Rebecca, Angelica and now the 16th May 1997 was Alexander born), lives in Badhoevedorp, outside Holland, the home village of Liesbeth. And they also live in Monaco. Nowadays Marco says that he don’t want to coach or play football more, and I understand him. But anyway it was a delight to the eye to see you play football on a court Marco!

Marco, football with you was a great delight to the eye, and I wish you all the best for the future ©
